ahhh, pure heaven to me…
I have been a fan of Cuban music for approximately 10 years now. Blame my dad for introducing me to Beuna Vista when their albums hit big-time back in the late ’90′s. The music is so sweet and light and full of romance, soul, and imagery of simple joy.
I was thinking, however, about the fact that when I was a kid one of my favorite Disney movies was “The Three Caballeros”. Ha! I wonder if I have Disney to thank for instilling me with an “ear” for latin music.
Typically when I study, I need some sort of background “noise”, but I can’t listen to music in english because it can be more distracting. So, I frequently listen to my “genius” cuban mix on my iTunes or I tap into iTunes radio and listen to their cuban jazz station.
I think this song, “Orgullecida” is pure heaven. I don’t speak spanish so with the exception of a few cognates, I have no idea what the song is about.
Very nice.
I remember reading the great mystery writer Tony Hillerman preferred to work listening to music without words (I think it was either David Lanz or Jim Brickman on piano) for the same reason that you state.
Well, ah-hem, I do not know who the writer is that you are speaking of, but I have heard blurbs on NPR about working and distractions, etc… And I think I heard an interview in which the subject was multi-tasking and they discussed how music can be either distracting or helpful, just depends on the tempo/mood/rhythm, etc… and of course, if I don’t speak Spanish, well then the Cuban jazz is an excellent choice. Sometimes I try classical, but it too can be TOO stimulating or TOO relaxing….
