“Conscientious Consumption”
I have been getting a lot of traffic on my blog from googlers searching “horizon milk”. I was curious, and so I googled “Horizon milk”, and discovered that my post about the funky turn of Horizon Milk shows up on the first search page. In that search I discovered some forum entries, and a few sites referencing some trouble that Horizon brand, owned by Dean Foods, has been getting into over its violation of Organic farming standards.
I feel that this is a perfect example of where the definitions, choices, labels get confusing for me, the consumer. I have known for a few years now, that trusting the USDA Certified Organic label alone was not enough. But what the heck are we looking for anyway?
For me? My main priorities are the health of my family, meaning absence of trace chemicals in produce and other goods, and a general sustainability for the world around us. Humane treatment of animals is also a preference. Although, sometimes the concept of “no antibiotics” has me wondering what happens to a sick cow? Is she left to suffer?
I found this Website, All About Organics, by the Organic Consumers Association. I also like the thought-provoking video, “What’s Organic about Organic?”
