The Monsters Have Arrived

June 25, 2009

Is it the developmental stage? 4 years old? Must be.

Sounds and noises in the dark… “they’re monsters”…. I tried to tell him they don’t exist… and then the conversation turned to why he needs to sleep in mama’s bed.

So is it monsters or just wanting to be with mama? Ohhhh, alright get in here, but be quiet

under the bed, outside, sounds all around

Good skill with that one–yikes. We are very protective with what the oldest boy has watched on tv, and he has only had a few probs with that stuff. He knows as well to change the channel quickly when something he is watching gets edgy before the little ones see it.

We have some friends whose older kids have exposed their 7 year old to just about everything frightening that one can think of–yes, you guessed it, he is scared of the dark at night.

I think in the case of Jackson that it’s a little developmental… complexity of thinking skills growing and imagination growing and thus little sounds could be “monsters”, although I think the concept of monsters was planted there by outside influence.

ha! I saw a cute book (was it at barnes and noble? or the art museum?) about a Monster who was scared to go to bed because he had a “little boy under his bed”! It was an adorable book…. I told Jackson a few nights ago when he tried to bring up monsters, “Jackson, did you ever hear of the little monster who was afraid to go to bed because he thought there was a little blonde boy under his bed?”

I also DO think it was a ploy to get into my bed…. he has always been my best out of all three about going to bed, and suddenly in the past two weeks he’s been begging to sleep with me or stay with me….

Soo, when he came running in my room announcing that there were monsters in his room I told him plainly and “flat out” that monsters are not real, Jackson… and he insisted on noises so I followed him to his room and we stood in there for a few minutes listening to the “sounds”… neighbor’s air conditioner, our air conditioner vents, plumbing, dryer from across the house…. I told him that if he were in MY room he’d hear the same sounds….

Oh and I sure the PSA was fun–I bet you do well with that type of thing.
