Autism parents- I need insight on special olympics “young athletes”
I discovered, through some googling clickity-click, click this link, ooh click that link, a Special Olympics “Young Athletes” group that is trying to form locally. From what I can tell, the Special Olympics has designated a new “group” or offshoot for young children who are not of qualifying age (8) for Special Olympics.
The local group has a series of picnics organized for the summer, and their first will be in about a week…. I was tempted by the opportunity to get out and meet some other mothers of disable children, and also give Olivia an opportunity to “hang” in a social atmosphere… but, I am starting to wonder just HOW DISABLED, particularly mentally and verbally, most participants are and whether this would really be a good fit.
Naturally, the only way to know is to just go. Once won’t hurt, but sheesh I do not want to be the only “autistic” one there. I think the child of the mom organizing it has cerebral palsy.
Maybe I am over-thinking it. Maybe I should just not worry about it and keep looking for an autistic “play group”. Maybe I should not worry about it and stop thinking like a disabled person in isolation and just go and take my autistic daughter and let her REPRESENT for the autistics among us.

That over with, if it is something that you think Olivia might enjoy without too much frustration, I think you should go. For example, I don’t think it would work for us, too much time during transitions, probably, and Jon would melt down. He enjoys P.E. so much at school, but that is an inclusive setting.

you know, I thought the photo of april levigne (sp?) was a little odd, but figured the person might have been a fan…. and there was no link to some other site sooo…. oh and it was lacking any “kim kardashian nude”, LOL…
Meh! I decided not to go. John has been asking for us to come and visit him for the weekend, and so I think that would be better for us all… to go see John. He’s been begging for a WHILE to take Olivia to see the Butterfly Conservatory at Callaway Gardens, so maybe we’ll do that.
