To leave the hornet nest? or exterminate?

June 22, 2009

I was getting into my car this afternoon when I spotted a grey pear shaped nest in the upper corner of my garage door frame. I’d never seen a nest of that “design” before. Most summers I get some sort of wasp that builds little nests around my house, (the exterior), and I usually just leave them alone, and they leave ME alone.

I mentioned it to my dad at lunch, and he said it was definitely a hornets’ nest. After doing some googling, it looks like it belongs to the bald-faced hornet.

But what do I do? I am more afraid of messing with it than just leaving it alone… but if they are territorial up to any sort of range, then having them hanging out above my garage probably isn’t so wise either.

Hmmm… and I’m feeling like a bit of a scardy-cat too. I don’t want to try to spray it ’cause I’m scared. :)

Alright Update: with a little more searching around for information, I obviously don’t know what species of insect this really is. I only saw one away from the nest, and that was this evening when I came home, the insect was about 10 feet away from the nest… but, from the shape of the nest it is most definitely a hornets’ or yellowjackets’ nest.
