Ahhh, beach

a little beach action, for which I was in desperate need. The print on my Economist kept rubbing off on my legs and abdomen, it was the funniest thing. I think the oily sunscreen was the culprit. (pic from the iphone)
Just what I needed yesterday… although my beach resistance usually max’s out at about 2 hours, I made it about 2-1/2 when I finally gave John the ol’ sign. Heck, and we got out there at 10:00am…. freaking hot! There’s even heat advisories on weather.com. Oh, but I needed some beach action. Sans the little people too. Hmmm, maybe I should creep back out there today before the kids come home from their weekend with their father.
Our day of “clearing our minds” started with the beach, then pizza downtown with a stroll through an art gallery, an afternoon nap, and finally we ended our day with a trip back downtown for dinner at Ruth’s Chris and another gallery stop. This time it was at a photographer’s gallery, a fairly new gallery that the artist and his wife were running together.
It was actually pretty cool to see. And John was poking his nose into the artist’s printing area in the back of the gallery, where he does his own printing. We chit-chatted a bit, the guy showing John his big fancy wide format printer. I mentioned that a lot of photographers send their images off-site for printing and that it was cool to see that he was keeping his hands in the artistic process by doing his own printing. He concurred that it gives him control through the entire process, from shooting to printing. It’s amazing to see just how much has been taken for granted since photography has gone digital….
(Side note here, I remember the days, when I was friends with several photography majors, in college, and I would spend hours hanging out with them in the photo labs and dark rooms, processing film and exposing prints. To go from that to simple printing ink on a sheet of paper. Total twist of concept. From complex chemical reactions on a pre-treated piece of paper to feeding a roll of white paper through an inkjet.)
