My Little Starlet

June 5, 2009

Olivia’s school receives funding from United Way. A few weeks ago, the director at her school approached me about submitting Olivia as a “success story” for United Way’s upcoming funding campaign. It is usually a big to-do throughout the city, signs everywhere, news stories, etc.

I was informed on Wednesday that United Way chose Olivia and want to use her as their “feature story”! My sweet little Olivia! I am so proud of her. It’s just a nice boost that we all can use. Maybe Mom, more than anything, you know? To know that all the efforts that I/we put into our little baby girl are recognized by someone else… and of course, I know that the point of a success story is so that people who are donating to United Way can see where their donations are going, but from my little corner of the world their choosing her is validation that things really are working.

I say this, because, well I haven’t ever blogged about the fight during my divorce over whether Olivia should be attending the school. The school that she attends serves infants through pre-k. The infant and toddler classrooms are not even operated like a typical daycare…. they really are learning/exploring focused. The teachers in each class are extremely “hands-on” with the children, they sit at the little tables with the toddlers while they eat, etc… little things make a huge difference with developing children….In addition to the preschool, they offer the intense behavioral-therapy for children with developmental disabilities. They don’t care if there is a diagnosis of anything. They use the ABLS assessment, which is a widely used assessment tool (even in public schools) and then develop an IEP that follows the individual’s needs….without naming names, etc, let’s just say that the opposing party claimed in court that my children were not attending the best school, and that it was not in the children’s best interest that I decided to start sending Olivia. pah!
