So…. I went
with my Dad to see the monks. First, however, we had lunch together at our new favorite spot, the scottish pub that I’ve mentioned previously.
Went to the Jepson. The mandala was extremely intricate, and the monks were quiet and focused while using brass or copper funnels to drizzle the sand.
I will say that the large and loud crowd, accompanied by photographing visitors, and a group of girlscouts did not lend to a peaceful, meditative environment. There was a small shrine to the Dalai Lama, and a table set up with vending items, silks, books, beads, etc. I am glad that the exhibit is an attempt to provide cultural ambassadorship outside of Tibet, and certainly there are visitors who may come to see the Mandala, who may otherwise not have spent much time reflecting on or learning about Buddhism.
There are several workshops offered for free throughout the week. I wish, though, that perhaps they would have had some postings in the museum with literature regarding the process of sand mandalas, and also the symbolism. Or, better idea, what if they actually hosted an accompanying exhibit on Buddhist art?
While Dad and I were at the museum, I got a call that child numero 1 needed to be picked up from school because she’d had a few accidents and was out of a change of clothes….
