Green Sunday Morning, and reptiles

May 3, 2009

What a fantastic way to get the week started, or Sunday started. John and I got up and headed out to the Ogeechee River-Savannah River Canal, where there are a couple of trails that loop down to the Ogeechee river. The barge canal was constructed in the early 1800′s as a way to transport cotton, rice and other agriculture from the inland plantations to the river front for storage/exchange, etc. If you know, or don’t know, the buildings along Savannah’s river front were cotton exchange warehouses.

Anyway, John has been wanting to get his hobby of landscape photography kickstarted, and I just like to take my cam with me wherever I go. Haven’t ever had a knack for landscape photography, but I enjoyed snapping pics today. It’s fun to discover what my own eye sees as a composition. I can’t wait til John gets home and we can compare. Two people on the same trail, with two different “eyes” for composition, subject material, etc. Will be fun to see how we viewed the same scenery.

Obvious enough, is probably the fact that I found the little baby slider sun bathing, and I was also the one who yelled “SNAKE!!!” when I saw the red-bellied water snake on the side of the trail. Ha ha ha. Of course, it was a harmless snake, but I always keep my eyes on the trail for the chance that someone we don’t want to meet is within a step. (has happened before, cottonmouth on a trail in N. Ga.)

The bitty museum has a Gopher tortoise on the premises. So before we left we went over to take a look. The lady inside the museum “hut” said that they can be a little shy, so perhaps they’d be in their hole, but this turtle, excuse me, tortoise was NOT shy at all! Came right over in a hurry, looking for a handout. Was soooo cool to watch…. such cool animals, and sad that they are threatened because of habitat loss.

The photos pretty much speak for themselves. There are a lot, but, oh well! You know, just a lovely way to start out a day…. lot’s of green, sounds of birds, woodpeckers, skinks flopping into the water….

Actually, I think all my time in the biology lab is starting to show.

stopped to ask for directions, but no one was home.

beauty can be found in anything, isn't it true? a decaying old tree trunk, providing nourishment for many other organisms long after the tree has died.

found this red bellied water snake laying on the side of the trail... when we stopped to turn and watch it, it moved pretty quickly down the bank to the water, so no decent photo... but still, fun to have a new introduction....

Now the fun begins… some of John’s photos are up. Bear with us as we are still trying to workout his layout/theme for his site…

Great pictures. We started our Sunday with a hike as well, but the cooler temps kept much of the wildlife hidden from us. Looks like you all had better luck than we did–our crew just saw a couple of frogs, a dead submerged snake, and lots of fish.

As you said, wonderful way to start the week with a hike.
