Can’t You Just Relax?

May 1, 2009

Me. Weekend sans des enfants (go ahead correct my French) and I have a hard time getting to that zone of relaxation. Always do.

By the time I get to Friday afternoon of the weekend that the kids go to their dad’s, I’m feuding with myself over whether to use the “time” to accomplish to-do lists, or to just toss to-do’s to the side and allow myself to relax.

It truly is the weirdest thing! I am a person who is capable of having a good time doing many an activity. Can bike, hike, go to yoga, get lunch with a friend, grab a glass of wine with a friend, go to the beach, watch TV, and all the while, I still have a hard time bringing my stress level down to where I am participating in the moment. And so, there is the answer to my question. I guess in retrospect, most of these weekends without the kids are spent trying to allow myself some mental room to “come down”. And to tell you the truth, it does have a positive effect on my level going into the week, starting with Sunday night after the kids come home. I have found that after many of my weekends, particularly when I’ve been around John, who is my “zen”, parenting becomes easier and my week of go-go-go is less intimidating.

Soooo, repeat 5x outloud, “I shall not be bothered with what I am not doing, and I shall not be bothered with what I might be doing, I shall only be located in the present.” hey! I could teach a yoga class…. ha ha ha…. the quintessential yoga instructor’s opening line, “do not concern yourself with what you were doing before you came to class, and do not think about what you will be doing after class. Only be here in the room, and focus on your breath.” yadda yadda…
