Green House-Guest

April 27, 2009

It’s not a new phenomenon, I’ve found them in the house before. But, not awoken in the middle of the night by a house guest and his singing. I thought in my dreamy state last night that the doorbell was ringing. Then, when I got up around 5:30am, I went to the other side of the house to change the AC. I flipped on the hallway light and suddenly a loud singing/ringing started. I followed the sound into the bathroom. The singing stopped. I flipped the bathroom light on and the singing started again. Flipped off, singing stopped. Then within a few moments it started up again. Hrmmm…. some little creature that surely is of the color green must be behind that shower curtain. But I being of the timid sort around creatures unwelcome in my home, slunked out and went back to bed for another hour. He continued to sing for another hour, at least. I finally dug out a rubbermaid container so I could catch him and take him outside…. but, when I went to investigate. There was no green thing to be found. And the singing had ceased. Well, being convinced that it was just a tree frog, which are ever so cute anyway, I figured if he had moved location within the house, that at least it is natural pest control, so we left the house and went on with our day.

Squirrel Treefrog- theyre awfully cute and fun to watch when clinging to the windows.. but serenades at 2am arent so fun.

It is now evening, and I was finishing up getting ready to settle in for bed, went across the house to look for something in the office, and as I walked back across the living room, “rrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhh!!!!” He’s still hangin’ around. So, I turned around, there’s Jackson standing in front of the bathroom, “mama, that frog is going to be loud like that all night?” I shrugged my shoulders, and he followed me into the bathroom to look for the house guest. “rrrrrrreeeeeehhhhh!!!!” Loud… I pulled back the shower curtain. No frog. Looked up on the window sill, no frog. Back of curtain? No frog. “rrrrrreeeehhhh!!!!”…. the drain! the sound was coming from the drain. We sat there trying to finagle the thing for a few minutes, but we couldn’t see anything. At least Jackson was getting a kick out of the scenario. He again asked if it was going to be loud during the night… and so I closed the bathroom door. Told him that was the best I could do. :) So, I suppose we’ll be having a serenade again tonight. Wish he’d just show his face.

Wow, we saw some of those froggies on our hike this weekend. You all have some challenges there–with that noise. I hope he finds a girlfriend/boyfriend soon and relocates…

I think he’s left us. The singing stopped sometime in the second night and never started again. I wonder if he was in the drain of the tub and went back down…. we have a community sewer/well system and I read online that it’s very easy for the frogs to get into the water lines…. though this route into our house is a first, I believe. The few other occasions that I’ve found frogs inside were in other areas of the house after heavy rain, I believe that just leaving the door open is their opportunity… especially considering they like to stalk my front porch light in the evenings waiting for a meal… means their right there next to the entry anyway.
